Hello again with the next segment of best places to retire when you are single. In the last segment, we discussed Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Well, here is another place ideal for 55+ single seniors. This is Florence, South Carolina. Florence too has many places to visit and things to do that can delight you and your date.

About Florence

Florence is a city full of southern charm and history. The city began as a railroad terminal at the juncture of three rail lines. During the Civil War, the Florence rail was extremely busy carrying troops, artillery, and supplies to various other states including Savannah and Richmond. The ever-expanding railroad activity increased the population of Florence.

The county was chartered in 1871 and is named after Florence Henning Harllee who was the daughter of William Wallace Harllee, the first president of the Wilmington & Manchester Railroad. Florence is the largest city in the north-eastern part of South Carolina and serves as the county seat. The climate of Florence is temperate with mild winters and warm summers.

Sight-Seeing and Attractions in Florence

Florence provides visitors and residents alike a great selection of cultural, sports and recreational and educational attractions. If it is the culture you want, downtown Florence has many historic buildings and museums. The Florence Museum of Art provides you the ability to see some great works by local and regional artists. If you wish to listen to classical and contemporary music, you can do so as the Florence Symphony Orchestra provides seasonal and themed performances.

Sports enthusiasts, you will find just about any sport here in Florence. There are two public golf courses open year-round. The Darlington Raceway holds many events including the NASCAR Southern 500 and also features parades and festivals. Camping and RV parking are available during the season.

Enjoy learning and exploring nature by taking scheduled tours on the 1.5 miles long Clemson University Outdoor Recreational Trail. On the way, you will find a Native American Village, crop fields, canoe launch, and aviary.

The Dooley Planetarium is a 33-foot dome that enables you to see projected images of major galaxies and important star formations. If you wish to check out how the solar system and planets were shaped, this is the place to visit.

As is clear, there are a host of things to see and do on your own, or with a date, in Florence. If contemplating a move to South Carolina, you should visit some of the active adult communities mentioned below. These offer you an array of amenities and the ability to live in comfort and luxury.
