Do You Know Your Airline Travel Rights?

Lifestyles Travel

Many seniors, who travel often, have no idea about their rights when in an airport. These rights or privileges make it easy for seniors to travel to any part of the country. Making use of these rights and privileges enables you to enjoy your time at the airport and have a stress-free flight.

Airport Assistance
When at the airport, you can request assistance from the time of arrival to the time of boarding. You can ask the check-in desk to provide you with a cart to ride to the gate or even a wheelchair if needed. You can also ask for assistance at security so that you are able to go through quickly or get into a short line and don’t have to wait long.

Fewer Security Restrictions
Most often, the security process is also eased a lot for seniors. For example, you may not have to remove your shoes and jackets when going through security. If in a wheelchair, you can go through a special screening process specially designed for seniors on wheelchairs. If you are on a pacemaker, you can request a pat-down instead of a scan.

Traveling with Medications
If you are carrying any medication, you need to bring a prescription along with the medication. This does not apply to over-the-counter medication. If you require oxygen tanks, you will be provided with specially approved oxygen tanks if you give the airline 48 hours’ notice.

Boarding
This is the best part about being a senior. You get to board the plane before the rest of the passengers. This is your right along with families with children. Most airlines provide this facility without any requests. Some airlines provide you with an escort to help you into the plane and into your seat. If you don’t have one, you can always request one. These escorts will help you with your bags, and make sure they are stowed in the overhead compartments.

Discounted Airfare
Sometimes, if you are very lucky, you may be able to get discounted airfares. Although this is rare, you may find a few airlines which offer this facility to seniors. There are rules and conditions for discounted airfare, so make sure you understand them before making any plans. Check with your travel agent or the customer service department of the airline, and you may be able to get discounted airfare.

Now you know about airline travel rights. The next time you travel, make sure you exercise your rights.
