Sonoma County is synonymous with wine tasting, lush greenery, and quaint towns. Winding roads lined with majestic redwoods lead to vineyard covered hillsides as far as the eye can see, with a hint of Pacific Coast air wafting through. This stunning California destination is located near the bustling city of San Francisco, Santa Rosa, and eclectic Sebastopol. Age friendly living particularly for 55+ active adults is what makes Sonoma an appealing location to put down roots. Walkable downtown areas, senior resource centers, and recent initiatives put into place by Age Friendly Sonoma County are giving aging with grace a whole new meaning. After all, wine country equates to getting better with age right?

According to the Census Bureau, 17.5% of Sonoma’s population was 65 or better in 2015, and these numbers continue to grow as baby boomers catch onto the active lifestyle offered in Sonoma County. The county’s Area Agency on Aging features an extensive publication of senior services including housing resources, activities, and healthcare services. Sonoma is home to the 55+ community of Clover Springs by Del Webb, and Oakmont Village, both with an array of fitness, and social amenities for vibrant, active living.

The charming city of Sebastopol accommodates all ages, and is a part of the Cittaslow movement that originated in Tuscany with its roots in promoting a slower pace of life. Sebastopol is all about organic cuisine, supporting local artisans, and environmental awareness. A mecca for retirees, this little town features a Sunday farmers market, options for alternative medicine, and delicious farm to table cuisine. Nearby Santa Rosa offers lifelong learning at Santa Rosa Jr. College with an older adult program where tuition free classes provide a wealth of opportunities.

With its coastal influence, Sonoma is known for it’s varied micro-climates, but overall moderate weather. For 55+ retirees, this idyllic climate is conducive to enjoying Sonoma’s hiking trails, bike tours, or choosing between over 425 wineries. Senior Walkabouters Hiking & Adventure Group or SWAG, is open to all ages, but primarily the over 50 circuit to get together and enjoy getting fit in the great outdoors.

Sonoma County continues to make strides to improve its public transit system, social, and healthcare services to accommodate all ages, and disabilities for a lively, and quintessential California living experience.
