Make Your Resolutions Successful

How many of you spent New Year’s day jotting down a list of goals, and intentions for 2021? Good for you! There is no better time to make changes for the better, and get your life on track. As we creep into the middle of January, maybe some of those items fell off the radar or didn’t happen at all but that’s ok. Get that list out again, and instead of beating yourself up for what “failed,” focus on those things that you know are realistic, and that you can start today.

The biggest mistake people make is putting pressure on others with too many changes at once. I heard a speaker say that we are where we are right at this moment because of the many SMALL changes we’ve made over the years. Get real with yourself. Instead of saying you’ll be up at 5 a.m. to run for an hour every day, commit to at least half an hour of exercise each day, and if you work up from there then great! Diets are huge this time of year, but am I going to give up dark chocolate and a glass of wine? No way. Start by cutting one thing out like soda or your morning donut. If that goes well, move on to the next food group that’s been plaguing your health. Going cold turkey isn’t feasible for everyone, and can leave you feeling frustrated, and deprived.

One resolution I love is a media “time-out.” Set a time whether it’s first thing in the morning or before bed to unplug, and use this opportunity to spend time with family, take a walk, or read a book. It’s amazing how a break from technology can connect us to nature, and to one another. Do you ever see people crossing the intersection whilst texting? Case in point!

Please don’t feel guilty, or throw your hands up if you didn’t accomplish your goal that day. It’s never too late to begin again. Live in the now instead of dwelling on yesterday. I love this quote, “Although no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending” – Carl Bard.
