Retirement should be a happy time. It should be a time of enjoying everything you ever wanted to do without the stress of work. It is a time to visit family and friends and have family and friends visit us. Yet, this does not happen to many seniors. Unfortunately, many seniors face a lonely life after retirement. This can lead to various health problems.

Problems with Loneliness

As we get older we become less and less independent. This makes doing things that we did without a thought difficult. We stop socializing and this can lead to disinterest, depression, loneliness, etc. We start wondering about the point of life, and this can lead to various physical complications. A disinterested and inactive mind can lead to Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

Overcoming Loneliness with Companionship

Companionship is the best alternative to combat loneliness in seniors. It is important for us to make the effort to connect with family. We must encourage children and other family members to visit often. If children and other family members are unable to do so, with their hectic lives, we should make the effort to socialize and make new friends. Many over 55 communities enable you to make new friends and provide a host of recreational opportunities to keep you busy and active.

You can also consider taking up a hobby or trying something new. These keep you motivated and happy, and you get to meet new people you can interact with. Most active adult communities have art and craft programs, community gardens and game rooms where you can be active and have all the companionship you need.

A pet is another great source of companionship. Pets are a great source of comfort for many seniors. Pets provide you with unconditional love and pleasure. Caring for your pet can give you a new reason to wake up in the morning. You can find a number of pet-friendly 55+ communities.

Finally, you can overcome loneliness by becoming tech-savvy. This is a great opportunity for seniors with mobility challenges. You can chat with friends, play games and keep in touch with family this way which keeps loneliness at bay.
