Best Cities for Dog Lovers

For us, die-hard dog people, no dogs allowed sign is the bane of our existence. Fortunately, many cities across the country have rolled out the welcome mat for our fur kids providing amenities like sidewalk water stations, with some restaurants even offering a menu for their four-legged clientele. You’ve got to love a place where green grass is plentiful, off-leash parks are the norm, and there’s a poop back dispenser everywhere you go. According to the United States Humane Society, pet dogs make up about 44% of households compared to 35% of those with cats. That said, finding a dog-friendly town is a top priority, so let’s find out which destinations get the paws up from Fido and his people.

Bend and Portland Oregon are almost equal parts of fur people and humans. Residents have easy access to miles of trails, lakes, off-leash dog parks, and lively walkable downtown areas. These northwest doggie havens are where outdoor adventures are enjoyed, with plenty of boutiques, specialized training centers, and even pet massage therapists. Grab a beer at Lucky Lab Brewery Portland, where you and your dog can chill out on the outdoor patio, or pick up a canine life preserver and head out on the Deschutes River in Bend for a day of kayaking.

San Diego, California – Surfs up in this Southern California town where according to Realtor.com, 63% of households own a dog. When you and your mutt aren’t riding the waves along the Pacific shore, San Diego’s North Park is a colorful neighborhood with dog-friendly cafes such as Young Hickory where you can order a latte and a dog treat. Del Mar Dog Beach is where dogs can romp off-leash and fancy-free while their owners enjoy some social time as well.

Austin, Texas – Ten dog parks, a yoga studio where you AND your dog can practice your cobra pose is only a sampling of what this hip, the dog-friendly town offers. As one of the country’s healthiest cities there’s no shortage of fitness opportunities for both of you with walking, and hiking trails, or even stand up paddle-boarding before cooling off at one of many coffee shops catering to people and their best friends. Pet-friendly lodging many without additional fees welcome visitors, and their pets with creature comforts such as bowls, blankets, and goody bags.

Whether you’re a tourist or a local, your dog will want in on the action, so roll down the car windows and experience these cities where pets are people too.
