Healthy Holiday Eating Habits for Seniors

Christmas is near and nothing says it’s merry than enjoying all the great foods prepared during this time. The cakes, roasted turkey, apple pies, plum puddings, and chocolate fudge and eggnog are all delicious and are so not healthy for you. Therefore, this is the season where you, as an active adult, should be careful about what you eat. Below are a few ways to stay healthy during the festive season.

  • Consume Small Quantities of Food – No one says you have to suffer while everyone eats all the delicious foods. Just eat your food in small quantities. This way, you get to enjoy the festive foods, and maintain a healthy weight and keep cholesterol at bay.
  • Always Make Time for Exercise – Yes, we understand, it is not easy to make time for exercise with such a busy schedule during the festive season. However, try and make time. This is for your own good. Spend at least 20 minutes walking, swimming or working out at a fitness center. If you are living in an active adult community, this task is a piece of cake for you.
  • Be Careful with Beverages – Eggnog and champagne are Christmas beverages that you should consume very little of. Alcohol lessens inhibitions and induces overeating. Similarly, non-alcoholic beverages can be full of sugar and calories. If you are attending a party at a senior living community, you may not have to worry about this as your health is often considered during meal preparation.
  • Reduce Gravy and Sauces – Sometimes the food prepared for the season may be beyond your control. However, you can control what you eat by reducing the gravy and sauces that go with the turkey, roast beef and mashed potatoes. So, don’t smother your food with gravy and sauces.
  • Bring your Own Healthy Dish – If you are worried about your health, and as a senior, you should be, you can try taking your own healthy dish to a holiday gathering. This way, you can avoid those sinful indulgences and ensure a healthy holiday.

These are just a few tips to ensure you have a healthy festive season. Follow these tips and we at ActiveAdultLiving.com® hope you enjoy your holiday to the fullest.
