While you and yours are feasting, and decorating for the holidays, it can be stressful, and sometimes the hazardous time of year for your fur kids. It can be easy to forget how the change of pace, and scenery can make them feel out of place, and sick in some cases. New people coming in and out of their homes, ingesting unfamiliar foods, and even household decor can be avoided with a few practical ways to keep your friend safe this year.
Keep toxic plants out of reach. Poinsettias, Holly, and Mistletoe are festive, and lovely to look at, but are poisonous to dogs, and cats. Remember cats are climbers, so owners may want to rethink bringing them into their homes.
Ingesting these plants can cause serious side effects such as vomiting, and diarrhea, and in extreme cases, seizures. If your pet exhibits any of these symptoms after being exposed, don’t hesitate to contact your veterinarian right away.
As tempting as it is to give Fido table scraps, remember these foods are unfamiliar and can cause stomach upset. Ask your guests to refrain from feeding your pet people food, and provide his or her favorite treats instead. Certain foods such as chocolate are toxic, so be careful about leaving bowls of it on the coffee table, or even counters if you have a counter-surfing dog!
Open house parties and new people can be a recipe for a great escape. Consider keeping your pet in a quiet room with their belongings, or hire a pet sitter while you’re hosting a gathering. Make sure your pets have current ID tags, or better yet, a microchip should he or they run away. Licensing is a must if your dog is recovered, and impounded to avoid penalty fees.
The holidays should be a wonderful time of year for everyone, including our pets. Keep them safe this season, and don’t forget to spoil them rotten!
