Colors of New England

April 25, 2013 • Fenny Peiffer

Rolling farmland gives way to brilliant forests bursting with fall foliage; this is the New England travelers have always imagined. Explore these hidden gems of the north on the eight-day Colors of New England trip by leading U.S. tour operator Collette Vacations.

Begin this journey with two nights in the heart of Boston, and explore this illustrious and resilient city. Start with a sightseeing tour that highlights Old South Meeting House, Public Gardens, Old North Church, Beacon Hill and the U.S.S. Constitution. Stop at the famed Faneuil Hall marketplace, bustling with lively street performers and colorful kiosks of local handiwork. Enjoy a very “Ye Olde New England” evening during a welcome dinner in Boston at America’s oldest oyster house, located on the historic Freedom Trail.

Travel to “the quintessential New England village” of Woodstock, Vermont.  See the covered bridge in the town center and its Georgian homes that surround its green landscapes. Visit the impressive 165 foot deep, mile-long Quechee Gorge, one of New England’s most popular natural wonders.

Next, revel in a two-night stay in beautiful Stowe, Vermont. Watch apples transform into cider the old-fashioned way – using a rack and cloth press – during a trip to the Cold Hollow Cider Mill. Indulge in a sampling of sweet treats during a tour of Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Factory.

Take the remainder of the day to leisurely discover this lovely town.

Say farewell to Vermont and hello to New Hampshire. Visit The Rocks Estate, the 1,400-acre property that is home to the North Country Conservation & Education Center. Tour the farm and learn about maple sugar production.

Leave the majestic forests for a ride through the picturesque lakes region – a popular vacation spot for visitors year-round. Board the M/S Mount Washington and cruise stunning Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire’s largest lake. After the cruise, visit Wolfeboro, the “oldest summer resort in America.” See fall foliage at its best during a drive along the Kancamagus Highway –an American Scenic Byway that offers remarkable sights of the White Mountains.

Depart New Hampshire for Maine, arriving in beautiful Boothbay Harbor for spectacular views of the coast including the lighthouse, summer homes and even local wildlife, such as harbor seals. Learn about the lobster industry and watch as a trap is pulled aboard the boat to view the fresh catch of the day. Later feast on lobster during a farewell dinner with fellow passengers.

Before the tour ends, travel through the seaside community of Kennebunkport, along the remarkable Ocean Drive. See Walker’s Point, former President George H. E. Bush’s summer home. Then, on your way home, sit back and reflect on the pleasant memories from this charming New England tour.

Departures are from September to October in 2013.
